A funeral service for Dennis Wilbur Gilman, 89, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, July 5, 2012 at the Douglas Baptist Church in Douglas, Wyoming with Pastor Roy Phillips officiating.  Interment will be held at the Oregon Trail State Veterans Cemetery in Evansville, Wyoming with military honors accorded.
Dennis Gilman lost his battle with colo-rectal cancer on Saturday, June 30, 2012 at his home in Douglas.
Dennis was an honorable man, loving, and caring husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather.  He was always willing to lend a helping hand to others.
Dennis was born December 27, 1922 in Sandwich, New Hampshire to Wilbur John Gilman and Lena Mae (Brown) Gilman.  He graduated from a small one room grade school in 1938 and graduated from Quimby High School in 1942.  During high school years he took a Red Cross first aid course, member of Future Farmers of America, a volunteer fireman, 4-H Club member, and a volunteer in Ground Observers Corps.  He served in the United States Navy from February 25, 1943 to February 21, 1946 as a Pharmacist’s Mate Second Class.  He returned to Sandwhich and worked gathering sap and making maple syrup and sugar.  Dennis married Corinne Mae Plummer in the garden of her parent’s home on August 3, 1946 in Moultonboro, New Hampshire.  They lived in New Hampshire from 1946 to 1949.  In February, 1949 they went to Grand Inagua, Bahamas, where he worked as a construction boss.  In April, 1950 they moved back to New Hampshire, and then on November 1, 1950 they moved to Sheridan, Wyoming, where he worked as a ranch maintenance man.  On August 3, 1951 they moved to Edgerton, Wyoming, and to Linch, Wyoming in November, 1951, where he spent the next 34 years working in the Conoco oil fields.  He became one of the first trained EMT’s in the state of Wyoming.  Dennis retired from Conoco as a head maintenance man in 1985.  After retiring Dennis and Corrine moved to Douglas.
Dennis was a member of the Douglas VFW Post and Samuel Mares American Legion Post #8.
Dennis loved woodworking and was very creative in designing and making anything once he had seen it.  His love of wood working involved making things as small as wooden toys, to lath-turned boxes and bowls, picture frames, furniture, houses, and even the building of a church.
He was a faithful member of the Douglas Baptist Church and dedicated servant of Christ.  He worked with the AWANA’s program for many years.  The love he had for the children in the program has been reflected over the years as these children, grown to adults have continued to show great respect and love for him.
He was preceded in death by his parents and wife of 51 years, Corinne, on March 28, 1998.
He is survived by his three daughters, Denise “Dee” (Burr) Linnabary of Lantana, Texas, Sherry (Arden) Bingham of Adams, Minnesota, and Laura (Richard) Sickler of Wright, Wyoming; sister, Lillian (Howard) Lamprey Jackson of Mexico Beach, Florida; brother, Clarence (Faye)  Gilman of Ogden, Utah; five grandson; thirteen great grandchildren; and many other relatives.
He won the battle over suffering on his terms and God’s timeline and is now free of pain.
Serving as pallbearers will be members of the American Legion and the Douglas Baptist Church.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Derek Linnabary, Daren Linnabary, Sean Conroy, Tony Bingham, Andy Bingham, and Richard Sickler Jr.  
A memorial to the AWANA Youth Group, Douglas Baptist Church, 135 Pearson Road, Douglas, Wyoming 82633 or to the Samuel Mares American Legion Post #8, P.O. Box 1, Douglas, Wyoming 82633 would be appreciated by the family.
