My heart goes out to "Uncle" Bill and his family. I have such great memories of the times spent in Joan's kitchen having cookies and coffee! Joan always had a smile and hug for those who stopped by. She was such an inspiration to me, and I will miss her.

Words can't express the depth of my sorrow with the realization that such an incredible woman was taken from this earth. In the darkest of times you were a flickering flame reminding us all that good still survives within in all and that despite what may be going on in our lives the love of family can make the world of difference. I regret that you never got to meet my family, they grew to love you for always thinking of them at each holiday, and never missing a birthday. they knew of you with your traditions of cards, stickers and balloon captions, which always brought a smile to our faces; but I wish they could have seen you in person and been more of an active part of your life beyond letters and pictures. It is a sad time for this world to have lost someone as special as you. I will miss you, and hope to one day be reunited with you, as well as the rest of our family, living in unity as we were meant to be. Peace be with you.

I still can't grasp the reality of this. I don't want to grasp the reality of this. I want to pick up the phone and hear her warm laugh on the other end of the line, to get a letter in the mail with silly little handwritten notes beside the stickers she had pasted all over it. We loved those cards and letters she was so faithful to send. They made us feel we weren't hundreds of miles away from this loving, special lady whom we would have loved to have seen daily. My son, Jeff, said it was a comfort to him to know that she will be surrounded in Heaven by not only her family, but all the little children who are there. He and my Daughter, Amelia, treasure the baby blankets and other items she so lovingly crocheted for their children.
My Daddy, Jim, (Virgil, as his family called him) met my Mother, Hope, during WWII when he was serving in Australia and she told me that when Daddy took her home to meet his family for the first time she was so impressed with Aunt Joan's welcoming, warm way. She said Aunt Joan had my Grandmother Amy's sweet, sweet spirit. They remained close over the years and shared many a laugh. I loved to hear them banter back and forth. Mother was very saddened to hear about her passing and sends her love and condolences to Uncle Bill.
Yesterday, I unexpectedly came across the following poem and it was almost as if Aunt Joan’s gentle touch had guided me to it. It’s like one of those she sent me when my Daddy died. I hope it will serve as a comfort to Uncle Bill and to my cousins who are missing her as I am.
“Those we love don’t go away; they walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near. So loved, so missed, so very dear.”
Love you Uncle Bill and I'm so sorry. I'm praying you will be comforted by the peace that comes from Heaven above.
