Funeral services for Bessie Gertrude (Grant) Hiser, 94, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Thursday, November 9, 2017 at the Gorman Funeral Homes-Converse Chapel in Douglas, Wyoming with Pastor Frank Wiederrecht of The Gathering officiating. Interment will be in the Douglas Park Cemetery. A reception will be held at the Samuel Mares American Legion Post #8 in Douglas immediately following the service at the cemetery.
Bessie Hiser died at her home in the Boxelder Canyon area south of Glenrock, Wyoming.
Bessie was born May 28, 1923 to Ulysses S. and Gertrude May (Chamberlain) Grant at the ranch in Boxelder Park, Wyoming. She was the survivor of a set of twins and was raised by her father and older sisters as her mother passed away when she was two months old.
On August 19, 1942 she married Elias Edward Hiser in Douglas. To this union 16 children were born, 15 of whom lived to adulthood.
She and Ed were ranchers in Converse County for many years. In addition to ranching they carried a rural mail route from Glenrock to Boxelder Park for twenty-three years.
She is survived by her children, Helen McCarty of Redmond, Washington, Joy Blackburn of Anchorage, Alaska, Patricia Bates of Casper, Wyoming, Donna Hiser of Glenrock, Hugh (Sue) Hiser of Alcova, Wyoming, Ramona Giles of Gering, Nebraska, Charles (Billye) of Casper, Fred (Patty) Hiser of Glenrock, Wynell (Gary) Davis of Casper, Margaret (Marvin) Newman of Anchorage, Darlene (Gus) Walls of Alpharetta, Georgia, Bruce (Cindy) Hiser of Glenrock, Wanema (Steve) Palchak of Bear Lake, Pennsylvania, Melissa (Barry) Armstrong of Thermopolis, Wyoming, and Tony (Kim) Hiser of Douglas. She has over 30 grandchildren, over 60 great grandchildren; and five great-great grandchildren with more on the way; many nieces and nephews; and enormous extended group of family and friends.
She was preceded in death by her father, Ulysses “Uly”, on June 2, 1953; mother, Gertrude “Gertie”, on July 24, 1923; husband, Ed, on April 11, 1997; son, Eugene Edward Hiser, on December 27, 1945; sons-in-law, Dean McCarty, Jerry Blackburn, Gordon Bates, and Wayne Giles; granddaughter, Jeanye Hiser; and siblings, Emogene, Helen, Zelma, Amy, John, Elmer, Allen, Jess, Frank, infant twin sister, and a sister in infancy.
Serving as pallbearers will be Clayton Hiser, Brian Bates, Brett Armstrong, Charles Hiser Jr., Justin Davis, and Jake Hiser. Serving as honorary pallbearers will be all of her grandchildren.
A memorial to the Ed and Bessie Hiser Memorial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 342, Glenrock, Wyoming 82637 would be appreciated by the family.
Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Wednesday from 4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M.
