Funeral services for Merle Frederick Mooney, 94, will be held at 3:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 6, 2024 at the Trinity Baptist Church, 1424 Griffith Way, Douglas, Wyoming with Pastor Tom Strock officiating. Inurnment will be in the Mountain View Memorial Park Cemetery in Cheyenne, Wyoming at a later date with military honors accorded at that time.
Merle Mooney died Friday, March 1, 2024 at Mountain Lodge Assisted Living in Douglas with his family at his bedside.
He was born Friday, February 14, 1930 in Montevideo, Minnesota the son of Frederick John and Pearl Ellen (Peters) Mooney. He was raised and educated in Granite Falls, Minnesota, graduating from the Granite Falls High School. Following graduation he worked on the family farm near Granite Falls. He entered the United States Air Force in 1950 and was discharged in 1954 at F.E. Warren Air Force Base in Cheyenne, Wyoming.
Merle was married to Dorothy Evelyn White on June 20, 1954 in Cheyenne at the F.E. Warren Air Force Base Chapel. Merle’s working career was with the State of Wyoming serving in various departments until his retirement, and returned for a short time following his first retirement. Merle and Dorothy moved to Douglas in the fall of 2013.
He was a very active member of the Calvary Baptist Church in Cheyenne serving as a Deacon and Trustee, also was a member of the Happy Jack Country Church in Granite, Wyoming and the Trinity Baptist Church in Douglas.
Merle enjoyed going to the family cabin in the Snowy Range, fishing, hunting listening to music, and dancing. He also did handyman work around the home, mainly the mechanic and fix up jobs.
He is survived by his children, Sherrill (Roy) Kilpatrick of Douglas and David (Linda) Mooney of Middletown, Delaware; grandchildren, Matthias (Michelle) Kilpatrick of Laramie, Wyoming, Jason Kilpatrick of Douglas, Nathan Kilpatrick of Douglas, and Rebecca (Paul) Franz of Valley Cottage, New York; and great granddaughters, Zophia Evelyn Franz and Natalia Caroline Franz both of Valley Cottage.
Merle was preceded in death by his father Fred, on December 17, 1978; mother, Pearl, on October 25, 1968; wife, Dorothy, on May 21, 2021; and sister, Madelyn Therese Johns, on April 17, 2013.
In lieu of flowers, memorials to Wyoming Rescue Mission, P.O. Box 2030, Casper, Wyoming 82602 or to a charity of the donor’s choice would be appreciated by the family.
