Funeral services for James Bertram McCartney, 98, will be held at 11:00 A.M. Friday, May 23, 2014 at the Memorial Baptist Church in Wheatland, Wyoming with Pastor Craig Cagle officiating. Interment will be in the Wheatland Cemetery.
James McCartney passed away peacefully Sunday, May 18, 2014 at the Platte County Memorial Nursing Home in Wheatland.
James was born at Cedar Bluffs, Kansas on July 20, 1915 the son of Benjamin Eltie and Bessie Matilda (Snodgrass) McCartney.
He attended schools in Decatur County, Kansas. He graduated from the Oberlin High School, where he played football and was a wrestler.
Leaving Kansas, he found work at Hawk Springs, Wyoming as a ditch rider repairing canals and delivering irrigation water. Later he worked for Middlesworth Hereford Ranch.
Leaving Goshen County he went to Esterbrook, Wyoming in Converse County. It was there while he was working in the timber that he met a school teacher, Nila Rebekah “Becky” Mills, who he married June 8, 1938 in Douglas,Wyoming.
Together they farmed in the Wheatland area on the Bill Ryff, Gus Graffie, and Ben Hall farms. They moved to Glenrock, Wyoming where they farmed and raised cattle. Later they returned to Wheatland where they bought the Norvel farm, continuing to farm and raise cattle.
They bought a small acreage to live on in retirement, but James never really retired. He worked for the Wheatland Irrigation District, also helping a son with his farming.
He was preceded in death by his parents; four sisters; two brothers; his wife, Becky, on October 16, 2008; two sons, Thomas Joel McCartney on January 5, 2000 and James “LeRoy” McCartney on February 8, 2009; one granddaughter; and two great grandchildren.
He is survived by two sons, Robert (Mary Jane) McCartney of Wheatland and Marion (Debbie) McCartney of Elk Mountain, Wyoming; daughter-in-law, Mary Lynn McCartney of Wheatland; and numerous grandchildren, great grandchildren, nephews, nieces, friends, and neighbors.

Family and friends may call at the funeral home on Thursday from 1:00 P.M. to 5:00 P.M.
