MARY VAN PELT Obituary

Funeral services for Mary Elizabeth (Weitzel) Van Pelt, 97, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Friday, July 6, 2018 at the First Christian Church in Wheatland, Wyoming with Pastor Casey Schroeder officiating.  Internment will be in the Wheatland Cemetery.
Mary passed peacefully in the early morning of Tuesday, July 3, 2018 at the Douglas Care Center in Douglas, Wyoming.
She was born Monday, March 14, 1921 to German immigrants, George Henry and Christina (Sinner) Weitzel at home in Gering, Nebraska.
On May 20, 1950 she married Donald Edward Van Pelt of Banner County, Nebraska.  In January of 1953 they bought a farm in Wheatland, where they raised Charolais cattle and farmed.  They worked very hard through the drought to make the place a success.  They were blessed with two children, Dianne and Tim.
Growing up she worked very hard with her family in the beet fields, but Sundays were always spent at church.  Mary loved teaching Sunday School.  At the age of 15, she started working in homes as a housekeeper and nanny before she was married.  She enjoyed working at the Scottsbluff hospital as a bookkeeper and also worked on the floor with the babies.  She even owned a candy shop at one point.
What she was most proud of was working side by side with Don on their farm.  She took great pride in her children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.  The family was very active in 4-H and FFA.  She was a 4-H leader for 22 years.  She belonged to many different clubs, such as Garden Club, Hobby Club and Platte Coounty Extension Homemakers and held office in clubs throughout her life.
She enjoyed gardening, crafts, and loved taking care of her family.  She enjoyed making little quilts for the police to give to little kids who have been in accidents, etc.
She is survived by her husband, Don, of Wheatland; children, Dianne (Billy) Smith of Clayton, New Mexico and Tim Van Pelt of Fairbanks, Alaska; grandchildren, Jenny (Jared) Klein and Josh (Barbie) Van Pelt both of Jay Em, Wyoming and Cotton Smith Pocatello, Idaho; and ten great grandchildren.
Mary is preceded in death by her parents; two brothers; three sisters, and one baby.
Serving as pallbearers will be Steve Zavorka, Josh Van Pelt, Jared Klein, Billy Dawson, Dale Dawson, and Tim Karlberg.
Serving as honorary pallbearers will be Huey Dawson, Tony Testolin, and George Van Pelt.
In lieu of flowers please give donations to the Wheatland 4-H, 57 Antelope Gap Road, Wheatland, Wyoming 82201.
