Maxine Rose Koerwitz, 93, of Wheatland, Wyoming, passed into the hands of the Lord on Saturday, June 29, 2019 at the Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland.
Maxine was born to John and Elsie (Goolsby) Kissel in Sunrise, Wyoming, on Sunday, May 31, 1926. She was the fourth of seven children. She spent her early years in Wheatland, graduating from Wheatland High School in 1943, at the age of 16. She attended the Mary Lanning School of Nursing, in Hastings, Nebraska, under the U.S. Army Cadet Nursing Program. She graduated as a registered nurse in 1948.
While attending nursing school, Maxine met Lloyd Koerwitz, and they married on July 8, 1948, in Wheatland. For most of their married lives, they lived in Lingle, Wyoming, where they raised their children. Maxine continued her career in nursing at the Torrington hospital, and retired in 1983. Maxine was involved in many activities in and around Goshen County.
In 1985, Maxine and Lloyd returned to Wheatland. She and Lloyd attended Covenant Lutheran Church, and were active in the VFW and the Ladies’ Auxiliary. Maxine was a kind and loving mother and grandmother, whose family meant the world to her.
Maxine is survived by Lloyd Koerwitz, husband of nearly 71 years, and children Bruce (Deb) of Cheyenne, David (Beverly) of Thermopolis, Wayne (Monica) of Wheatland, and Laurie (Pete) Toye, of Riverton. She is also survived by 14 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren, with 3 more to arrive soon. Maxine was preceded in death by her parents; brothers, Howard, Harry, Donald; sisters, Lora, Thelma, and Nora; and an infant daughter.
Friends are invited to a viewing at the Gorman Funeral Home – Platte Chapel in Wheatland on Tuesday, July 2, 2019 from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. Funeral services will be held at the Covenant Lutheran Church at 2:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 6, 2019, with Pastor Joshua Bruns officiating. Inurnment will follow at the Wheatland Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the VFW Ladies Auxiliary or the Covenant Lutheran Church.
