A celebration of life for Sterling Shawn Kelley will be held Friday, April 26, 2019 at 5:00 P.M. at the VFW Hall, 42 South Idaho Avenue, Guernsey, Wyoming.
Shawn passed away Monday, April 1, 2019 at Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland, Wyoming.
Shawn was born Sunday, November 5, 1961 to Sterling “Sonny” and Dagmar Kelley in Casper, Wyoming. He went to school in Casper until they moved to Guernsey where he graduated high school in 1981. He moved to Arizona to learn embroidery programming and lived with his girlfriend, Holly O’Brien, for thirteen years until he moved back to Guernsey and bought the Guernsey Hotel. He, his best friend, Rusty Reynolds, and what would become the true love of his life, Joy Oliver, converted two rooms into a donut espresso/coffee shop serving daily specials. Joy and Rusty ran the shop while Shawn cooked all the specials. Shawn remodeled four of the lower rooms and reopened the hotel with the loving help of his sister Deidra and Gary Ness. He stayed in the living quarters to help run the hotel along side Corrin Noggle who filled in, when needed, for camping and fishing getaways. Shawn also ran an embroidery business out of the hotel during all this time, but didn’t feel he was doing enough. He became a Hub City motorcycle club member, ran for city council, winning a three-year seat, and joined the fire department, becoming Chief. The fire department was Shawn’s greatest desire. But then on September 23, 2013 he suffered a severe stroke and his dreams crumbled.
He is survived by his girlfriend, Joy Oliver; sister, Colleen Conner and family; and several nieces, nephews, aunts, and uncles.
Shawn was preceded in death by his parents, Sterling “Sonny” on May 13, 1991, and Dagmar Kelley on December 15, 2018; sister Deidra Ness and brother, Mike Kelley.
The Gorman Funeral Homes – Platte Chapel of Wheatland are in charge of the arrangements.
