ALBERT ALLEN "AL" McCARTY

Albert Allen McCarty passed away on Tuesday, April 14, 2026 at the Platte County Hospital in Wheatland, Wyoming. Al was born on January 30, 1947, in Wheatland, Wyoming to Albert McCarty and Faye (Dewey) McCarty. He grew up in Wheatland and graduated from Wheatland High School.  

 In 1968, Al married Susan Kay Maher and to this union were born Samantha and the twins Doug and Tabitha. This marriage ended and he married Fran Lingelbach and added Casey and Kristi to his family. Years later, he married Sharon Benjamin and welcomed her adult kids, Larry, Shannon, and Shawna to the family. 

Al worked many jobs (butcher, welder, and an oil well tester) over the years, but in the 1980’s, he started McCarty’s Magic Carpet Cleaning, with his brother Steve. He ran this business in Nebraska and Wyoming for over 30 years.  

Al was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to fish and hunt. He had numerous bird dogs he trained over the years, including his favorite German Shorthair, Ace. He became friends with Bob Bowen in Chadron. Through taking him hunting in his wheelchair, the desire to help individuals in wheelchairs fulfill their desire to hunt grew, and he formed Chairbound Hunters, a nonprofit organization that enables these hunters to fulfil their dreams. It has grown over the years and was the highlight of Al’s life.  In his later years, when his health began to fail, the hunting seasons were what kept him going. Through Chairbound Hunters, he made many dear and lifelong friends. 

Al is survived by his wife, Sharon of Wheatland; children, Samantha (Cody) Howe, Casey (Rob) Cortney, Doug (Crystle) McCarty, Tabitha Smith, Kristi (Dana)Edwards, Larry (Audrey) Benjamin, Shannon Curry, and Shawna (Ryan) Purvis; his family includes his grand and great grandchildren: Rebekah (Justin) Kauffman, Hadassah, Elia, and Kezia; Clay (Kris) Howe, Matthew, Zach, Samuel; Ian (Topanga) Howe, Elisabeth Howe, Lydia Howe, Ben Howe, Gideon Howe, Timothy Howe, Daniel McCarty, Cora McCarty, Chad Cogdill, Sadeth; Jadyn White, Keynyn; Braydon Cortney, Jesse Cortney, Nick (Taylor) Edwards, Sadie; Taylor Edwards, Jevin Curry, Pierce Curry, Cambryn Purvis, Kyler Purvis. He is also survived by his brother, Steve (SteeV) McCarty and numerous nieces and nephews. His close friend Larry Wilson, who was a mainstay in the daily life of Al, was with him to the end. 

He is preceded in death by his parents; stepfather, Mack McElhaney; sister, Sharon; grandson, Evan; and many dear friends.
