Bernard George “Bernie” Matthews, 77, passed away Sunday, July 25, 2021 at the North Colorado Medical Center in Greeley, Colorado.
Bernie was born on Friday, August 6, 1943 in North Platte, Nebraska the son of Harold and Doris (Baty) Matthews.
Bernie was reared and educated in Torrington, Wyoming. Bernie graduated from Torrington High School in 1961. After graduation he attended the University of Wyoming.
Bernie met Dorothy Evans while attending the same church. They were married August 19, 1962 in Torrington, Wyoming. They stayed in Torrington and welcomed their first son, John in 1963. In 1965 they moved to Wheatland and welcomed their second son, Brian, in 1966.
Bernie worked as a meat cutter when he first came to Wheatland. Bernie and Dorothy opened up the first Mini-Mart in Wheatland in 1975. After they got out of that business, in 1982 they owned and operated the Chicken Hut for ten years. Bernie then went to work for the Sheriff’s office until he retired.
Some of his hobbies included hunting, fishing, and most importantly, spending time with his grandchildren. Bernie is also known for coaching baseball. He coached from t-ball all the way to men’s softball.
He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Matthews, of Wheatland; sons, John (Rhonda) Matthews and Brian (Valarie) Matthews, both of Wheatland; nine grandchildren; sixteen great grandchildren; and siblings, Darryl Matthews and Jerina Curran.
He was preceded in death by his parents and four brothers.
A celebration of life will be held at a later date at the First State Bank Conference Center in Wheatland, Wyoming.
