Clarence Nathaniel Davidson passed away in Sheridan, Wyoming on Sunday, December 10, 2023, at the age of 99.

He was born Monday, October 6, 1924, in Shamrock, Texas to Jesse Boyd and Alta Laura (Pryor) Davidson; the oldest of three children born to the couple and the only boy. As a young child, he helped his Grandpa Seth Pryor at his service station/grocery store six miles east of Shamrock, watching as the original, unpaved version of Route 66 was built. He also watched as car after car drove by, out of the Dust Bowl devastated Texas, seeking a better life in California. Clarence told many stories about his early years working with his grandpa; one especially memorable was about the night Bonnie and Clyde paid a visit to the gas station, forcibly suggesting Seth open the gas station to help them, thankfully leaving him unharmed. Clarence also was very proud of Grandma Illa Pryor’s half Native American Cherokee heritage.

Clarence graduated from Shamrock High School in 1943. Following graduation, knowing job opportunities were scarce in Shamrock, he borrowed money from his dad and rode the bus to Rawlins, Wyoming where his mom, stepdad, and new, baby sister resided. Clarence initially worked on a sheep ranch before going to work in the warehouse at the Sinclair Oil Refinery. Ever industrious, he delivered milk during a brief period when workers at the refinery went on strike. While in Rawlins, Clarence met Joanne Freda Powell, and they wed in Rising Sun, Indiana on July 8, 1952. Their first daughter, Mary Lea, was born in Rawlins on April 4, 1953. Clarence, Joanne, and Mary Lea moved to Douglas in 1953. On November 8, 1956, a second daughter, Carol Jane, joined the family.

During his 67 years in Douglas, Clarence owned two service stations and a Chrysler dealership before purchasing Davidson Auto Parts which he operated until he retired. His favorite activities were fishing and hunting, first with his father-in-law and brother-in-law and later with good friend Bill Townsend. Following Joanne’s death in 2013, Clarence kept busy enjoying music at the Senior Center, visiting with anyone he came across, helping friends, cruising the country roads, and enjoying his nightly cheeseburger at McDonald’s. Ill health prompted his move to Sheridan in March of 2020 where he lived with Carol and Thone until moving to Green House Living in March of 2023.

Clarence was preceded in death by his wife, Joanne, on September 15, 2013; his parents; and his sisters, La Dawn and Joan.

He is survived by daughters, Mary Lea Klotz (Albert) of Bella Vista, Arkansas and Carol Stewart (Thone) of Sheridan; grandchildren Amanda Wolf (Kyle) and Michael Klotz (Holly) both of Webb City, Missouri and Timothy Stewart (Katryana) of Waimea, Hawaii; great-grandchildren Ava, Leah, and Mya Wolf; Brylee and Olivia Klotz; and Rory Stewart; his sister, Alta May Caple of Albuquerque, New Mexico; as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

Honorary pallbearers are Albert Klotz, Thone Stewart, Amanda Wolf, Michael Klotz, and Timothy Stewart.
