A funeral service for Darlene May Fertig, 84, will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, November 3, 2024 at the Wheatland Bible Church in Wheatland, Wyoming with Pastor Tony Borton officiating.
Darlene Fertig passed away on Monday, October 28, 2024 at the Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland.
Darlene was born on May 31, 1940 in Sunrise, Wyoming the daughter of Stanley Lowell and Frances Agnes (Tobin) Palmer. She was reared and educated in Guernsey, Wyoming. Darlene was an active participant in Guernsey-Sunrise school activities where she played the clarinet in band, sang in the choir, was a cheerleader, and a band majorette. She also played the piano and would accompany songs at church. Darlene was an accomplished seamstress and learned to sew at the young age of nine. She entered many 4-H sewing projects and won many purple and blue ribbons. She did so well, that at 10 years old, she won a shopping spree at JC Penney for her efforts. Later, Darlene had her own business ‘The Prairie Boutique’, sewing many items, one being the popular ‘Possible Bag’. She also, enjoyed gardening and being outdoors.
She eloped with the love of her life, Kent Theodore “Ted” Fertig, on September 8, 1958 in Denver, Colorado. To this union five kids were born. In 1964, Darlene and Ted moved their family to Kennewick, Washington to work with friends. The family moved back to Wheatland in 1970 where Darlene went to work for Safeway as a checker. She also worked as a manager for Flaggers on road construction for several years. Darlene then went to work at Wheatland Cooperative as a secretary where she later retired. She eventually returned to work with her son-in-law, George, at American Auto Sales.
Darlene is survived by her four daughters, Misty (Kelley) Tyson of Wheatland, Kim (Doug) Ockinga of Cheyenne, Wyoming, Brandy (George) Pile of Wheatland, and Tia (James) Bernard of Westminster, Colorado; ten grandchildren; seventeen great grandchildren with one on the way; two sisters, Leona Lenk of Aurora, Colorado and Karen (Dick) Rhoades of Rifle, Colorado; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; brother, Stanley Palmer; husband, Ted Fertig; and son, Till Fertig.
A memorial to the Platte County Legacy Home, 100 19th Street, Wheatland, Wyoming 82201 would be appreciated by the family.
