Frances Mae (Griffin) Herring was born at her grandparents’ farm in Wheatland, Wyoming on Monday, January 4, 1926, to George S. Griffin and Edith (Pike) Griffin. In 1927, the family moved to Laramie, Wyoming, where her father went to work at the University of Wyoming Stock Farm, becoming the superintendent. Frances grew up at the UW stock farm which is now the Wyoming Territorial Prison. This is one of two places that she lived in her life that are national historical sites. She graduated from Laramie High School in 1944, after which she went to work at the A Bar A Guest Ranch in Encampment, Wyoming as a cabin girl, cleaning cabins. Her future husband, George Herring was a handsome cowboy also working there. They married in 1945.
Having worked for various ranches and bull sales across the West, they settled in Laramie with their two children, Gordon and Linda. In 1957, Frances went to work for the UW Bookstore as the textbook buyer, retiring in 1985. She moved to Wheatland in 1990 to be closer to her daughter and grandchildren. She loved her yard and garden and could grow the most beautiful flowers. She enjoyed walking to the park and reading, she read thousands of books over the years and she enjoyed her grandchildren’s activities. She was a loving mother, grandmother, sister, and friend. Frances passed away on Thursday, January 4, 2024, her 98th birthday, surrounded by her loving family.
Frances is survived by her daughter, Linda Dunlap; grandchildren, Susie, Scott, and Skye Dunlap and their families; son, Gordon Herring and family; and brother, Ken Griffin and family.
