JERRY WAYNE MOORE

After 20 plus days living in a hospital, fighting to go back to the ranch, Jerry Moore finally tipped his hat good-bye on Friday, June 5, 2026 in Douglas, Wyoming.  He left this life peacefully, surrounded by his family and close friends.

Jerry was born in Douglas on Tuesday, January 9, 1951, the son of John and Toots (Reed) Moore and was raised and educated on the family ranch between Converse and Campbell Counties. He graduated from the Douglas High School, served in the National Guard for a brief stint in the early 70’s, and then went to work on various ranches for family and friends.

              Jerry loved Wyoming and his family heritage as a 4th generation rancher for 75 years.  He raised livestock and horses, and a few great dogs, all named Tuffy; had a special passion for firearms and hunting coyotes; he loved to fly with cousins, soloed a few times, but never got his license; liked to gamble, play cards, rope and play golf; but most of all, he loved his daughter.  He was raised in the way of life that people were to treat others as they would want done to them.  He was taught to be polite, especially to women, look people in the eye when talking to them, give an honest handshake, and he listened and learned from several sources, including uncles and cousins on both sides of his family unit.  He treasured and could tell the stories that he heard as a young man. 

              Livestock and horses served as teachers for most of his life.  Jerry and his siblings learned to ride soon after learning to walk.  Nero got them started; Mighty Mouse taught them even more; but the first horse that Jerry called his own was Tonka, a paint gelding who gave him much pleasure and challenge. His last horse was a liver chestnut named Pretty, who was his for 15 years, after which, a side-by-side became his mode of transport.

Jerry fell in love and married Sue Cabral February 2, 1980.  They spent a few years together, ranching and raising Joe and Tiffany, but after their divorce, he spent the remainder of his life single.  Jerry grew to be an oxymoron, meaning if you wronged him in any way, he wasn’t quick to forgive, and he could be rude and crude if he felt someone was trying to get the best of him or was doing something he thought was wrong. However, and of greater importance is the truth that to Jerry, family is family.  He was a hardworking, bighearted man who privately and behind the scenes displayed a heart for many and was literally a man who would give the shirt off his back if he felt it would help.  Many will treasure and retell the lessons he conveyed and the ways he shared his heart with them. 

As the 5th generation began to take over the ranching operations, while he wasn’t prone to travel too far from home, he bought a home in Mesquite, Nevada, and spent some winters down there, but sold that when COVID took away his privileges to wander in and gamble at leisure, so he came home and spent the remainder of his life on the land he called home.

              Jerry was preceded in death by his father, John; mother, Toots; brother, Pat;, and nephew, Travis.

He is survived by his children, Joe & a grandson, Dominic; Tiffany & Heath; sister, Echo & Rick; brother, Floyd; sister-in-law, DeeDee & Bill Nida; and nieces and nephews: Tye & Shelly Roy, Amanda & Tony Vitto, Mara Moore, John & ManDee Moore and their daughters: Paislee, Bella, and Annie; Corky & Kylee Moore and their daughters: Madison and Echo; Clay & Jenelle Moore and Guy; Sally & Michael Barlow and Isaac, Avery, Colton, and Caleb; Lucas & Jessica and Patrick and Allison; and Angela & Ryan and Abigail and Evelyn; as well as numerous Moore and Reed cousins.

Serving as pallbearers will be:  Andy Moore, Vern Moore, Frank Moore, Parker Moore, John Moore, Floyd Moore, Bob Downs, Kirk Hornbuckle, and many honorary pallbearers made up of friends and family.

              Funeral services for Jerry will be held on Monday, June 15, 2026 at the Nine Mile Ranch, after a family branding; the first one he will have missed in 70+ years.  Services and interment will be at the family cemetery at 3:00 P.M.  Also, family and friends who are unable to attend the funeral at the ranch may visit at the Gorman Funeral Home on Sunday, June 14, 2026 from 1:00 to 2:00 P.M.  

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given in Jerry’s honor to the Ranchers Memorial Scholarship Fund through Converse County Bank, P.O. Box 689, Douglas, Wyoming 82633.
