Larry Arnold Yost passed away on Thursday, December 10, 2020 near Wheatland, Wyoming. He was born in Cheyenne, Wyoming the son of Lawrence and Alta Yost on Sunday, December 2, 1945. After their deaths, he was raised by his maternal Aunt Marion and her husband Bill Martinec. They considered him their son. Larry graduated from Cheyenne Central High School, and earned a Bachelors and Master’s degree from Chadron State College in Chadron, Nebraska. Larry participated in several high school sports and continued playing football for CSC Eagles.
Larry taught for over 40 years at the middle and high school levels in Alliance, Nebraska, Cheyenne, Chugwater, and Glendo, Wyoming. He engaged students in his science classes with activities that included plant and insect collecting, dissection, rocketry, and the occasional field trip to Glendo Lake or Horse Creek that may have also involved getting a fishing line wet. He wore many hats when he served as principal for a few years in Chugwater, even driving school bus when needed. Larry coached many teams and sports over the years, touching generations of students and athletes by the end of his career. In recent years, he worked for Platte County Weed and Pest. He enjoyed driving all over this beautiful area, and conversing with those he met.
Larry loved the outdoors and spent as much time as possible fishing, backpacking, hunting, camping, and boating. He was beloved “Pop” to his seven grandchildren, and was always there to rig up a fishing pole, pull someone on a tube or skis behind his boat, or share a favorite spot in Snowy Range.
Pop was kind and generous person, who helped many family members and friends over the years, and gave quietly to countless charities, though he himself lived very simply. He had a great sense of humor, and will be missed by everyone who knew him. His memory will live on with his children and grandchildren, and in trout-filled streams, wildflowers and meadows, still forests and high mountain peaks.
Larry is survived by his wife, Sherry; daughter, Kelley Yost and her husband, Ethan Petite; son, Pat and wife Nikki; and grandchildren, Maya, Payton, Avynn, Autumn, Samantha, EB, and Keller. He is also survived by Sharon Bean, Penny and Jack Shockley, Billy and Lorrie Martinec, and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; aunt and uncle; and brothers, Robert and Jack.
