Marvin Eugene Lauck was born on Saturday, March 23, 1929, in Longmont, Colorado, the first-born son of Katherine-Stugart-Lauck and Lucas (Louis) Lauck. When Marvin was five years old the family moved to Wheatland and began farming there.
Marvin had many fond memories of his childhood. As a young boy, he liked to fish and hunt. He enjoyed the farm life, helping his dad and other farmers and ranchers in the area. He attended a country school for his first eight grades. There was always plenty of work but he seemed to find time for a little mischief too. One time, Marvin got stuck in the family’s ten-gallon crock which was finally broken to free him! He tried to “sew” on his mother’s machine sending a needle through his finger! At twelve years old he lost an eye, in his own words, “while doing a dumb trick with a firecracker!” When Marvin was fifteen the family moved, but not far, just east of Wheatland to a ranch on Chug Creek.
Marvin completed his high school years, graduating from Wheatland High School. On September 18, 1954, Marvin and Geraldine (Havely) were married. A year later, a daughter, Debby, was born. Dennis was born just thirteen months later and their third child, Peggy, was born in 1959. The Lauck family lived a few miles west of town and Marvin took up farming and feeding cattle. He served on the Platte County Resource District Board and the Wheatland Co-op Board. Marvin spent lots of his time running up and down the road looking for “good deals buying cattle.”
Marvin had an easy-going way and enjoyed getting to know people. He always knew at least one face in a crowd and took the opportunity to strike up a conversation. His jokes and storytelling were enjoyable, usually accompanied with a toothpick in his mouth! He enjoyed people and his family of growing grandchildren. He never knew a stranger and was known as “one of the easiest fellows to get along with.” Marvin appreciated music and singing. He would join the family each year with Christmas caroling. He taught himself to play the harmonica and the guitar.
Marvin leaves loving memories with his children, Debby (Ronnie) Becker, Dennis (Kim) Lauck, and Peggy Bise, all of Wheatland. He is also survived by a brother, Robert (Lorretta) of Wheatland, and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife, Geraldine; brother, Norman "Buddy" Lauck; and grandsons, Stephen Bise and Ronan Becker.
In his own words, he would indeed have said, “I had a mighty fine life!”
