A Book of Life was closed in the passing of life-long Platte County resident, Maxine E. (Cobb) Suntych, 98, on Wednesday, October 18, 2023, at the Platte County Legacy Home.
Maxine was born on Saturday, January 31, 1925, in Wheatland, Wyoming, the daughter of Platte County pioneers, Lester E. and Isola Mae (Talley) Cobb.
Maxine attended the Moody School northeast of Wheatland through the eighth grade, then she rode her father’s school bus to Wheatland High School and graduated in 1942. Her mother, Isola, had graduated from Wheatland High School in 1917.
On November 29, 1944, Maxine married John Beran Suntych at the United Methodist Church in Wheatland. To this union, two children were born, Neil and Winnie.
John and Maxine owned a farm northwest of Wheatland and also ran a large herd of sheep for many years.
In 1956, John and Maxine built and operated the Tastee Freeze located on South Street. Years later John and Maxine expanded and built the first A&W drive-in across the street from the Tastee Freeze. In 1973, the A&W was replaced with the building of the Big A Restaurant and Lounge. In 1978, a package liquor store was added.
Maxine is survived by her son, Neil of Wheatland; grandsons, Darren Suntych and Jason Suntych both of Greeley, Colorado; nephew, Lee Johnson of Wheatland; and several great grandchildren and nieces and nephews.
Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, John, on June 11, 2005; daughter, Winnie, on September 3, 2008; her father, Lester E.
