Obituary

Merle Lorraine (Meyer) Walter, 88, passed away on Saturday, August 19, 2023, after a short stay in the Platte County Legacy Home in Wheatland, Wyoming.

Merle was born on Monday, February 11, 1935, in Soloman Township, Phillips County, Kansas. She was the fifth child of Earl Max and Marion Clara (Cole) Meyer.

On June 15, 1952, she was united in marriage to Glenn Donald Walter in St. Francis, Kansas. They made their home on the Walter family farm for many years. She called herself a homemaker but was much more. She worked alongside her husband raising wheat, barley, and silage for their hogs, cattle, and sheep while also raising four children.

In 1966 the family moved to Fort Collins, Colorado where Merle continued to work with Glenn running Walter Construction, building custom homes. In the mid-1970’s, after moving to a small farm north of Fort Collins, she continued to help in raising cattle and help with construction projects.

Merle proudly received her high school diploma in 1974 from Fort Collins High School after taking courses in woodworking and auto mechanics. She maintained her own vehicles without assistance for many years after. She was an avid reader studying the Bible, history, geography, and her ancestry.

Merle and Glenn moved to the Mitchell, Nebraska area in 1997 to return to full-time farming where she again helped raise corn, alfalfa, and cattle.

Following her husband’s death in 2010, she moved to Wheatland, in 2012 to be closer to her son Curtis.

Merle was a member of the Wheatland United Methodist Church and enjoyed in assisting with activities in the church and the Wheatland community.

Merle is survived by her four children, Randy, Curtis (Cheryl), Peg (Gary) Dietz and Patti (Pat) McCann. She is also survived by a large family of fourteen grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; and fifteen great-great grandchildren.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Glenn; brothers, Duane and Ray; sisters, Gwen and Mary; and two great grandsons.
