Mike was born in Denver, Colorado the son of Stephen and Anne Marie (Lasser) Kay. As the son of a career Army and Air Force man, Mike and his five siblings moved frequently. Mike was especially fond of his time living in Warrensburg, Missouri, before settling again in the Denver area. Mike, a loving family man native to Denver, led a dynamic and service-oriented life until his passing. He was married to Eileen, his high school sweetheart since December of 1968, and to this union 3 children were born, Brian, Laura, and Pamela.
Beginning his professional journey as an eighth-grade mathematics teacher in a parochial school, he later joined the Colorado State Patrol serving as a Trooper from 1971 to 1981. During this period, he served in various locations including Steamboat Springs, Dinosaur, and Grand Junction, Colorado.
In 1982, he became a self-employed entrepreneur for a decade, during which he immersed himself in community development in the Denver area. His involvement included directors’ roles at the West Chamber in South Jeffco and the Meeker Chamber of Commerce, taking part in the planning committee for the July Fourth Range Call Rodeo, and contributing to the initial planning stages of Colorado C-470’s construction.
Mike retired to Wheatland in 2006 where he appreciated outdoor activities such as exploring the state and observing wildlife. Mike had a love for music. He would interrupt you in the middle of a conversation and sing a song to you. He left behind a legacy of service, community involvement, familial dedication, and was a faithful friend to many. His dedication to his family was unmatched and they were his world.
