RONALD ELKINS Obituary

Ronald Lloyd Elkins, 81, of Guernsey, Wyoming passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 30, 2022 at Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland, Wyoming.
On October 8, 1940, Ron was born in Walden, Colorado in the house he grew up in. Ron graduated from Jackson County High School in 1958. He loved high school and was involved in sports, band, and choir. After graduation, he joined the United States Navy and attended radio school in San Diego, California. He was then stationed at the United States Naval Communication Station in Guam where he worked as a circuit controller. Ron played football while in the Navy for the Guam Interservice League, even being named an All-Star selection. He returned from Guam in 1961 and married Sharon Ann White on June 1, 1962. They moved to Alamosa so Ron could attend Adams State College where he played football. Injury cut his football career short after a scrimmage with the Canon City Inmates. He then transferred to Colorado State University where he attended school part-time and worked as a laborer with Hensel Phelps Construction Company. He worked three years as a laborer, and was then promoted to a position in the office as an Estimator. After 18 years with Hensel Phelps, he accepted the Chief Estimating position with PCL Construction of the Denver division. After only five years he was promoted to Director of Estimating for offices in Denver, Seattle, Orlando, Minneapolis, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and the Canadian Districts. Ron acquired many frequent flier miles. In 2003 Ron retired after 21 years of service with PCL Construction. With retirement, Ron and Sharon enjoyed traveling, golfing, fishing, and watching grandkids’ activities. Winters were spent in Arizona and the remainder of the year in Guernsey. One of Ron’s biggest accomplishments during retirement was acquiring a trophy moose that made it into the Boone and Crockett records.
Ron and Sharon were married for 59 years and were blessed with two daughters, Kelly Renell (Todd) Frank and Kim Rae (Matt) Bowman; four grandchildren, Sydney Bowman, Trevor Frank, Eli Bowman, and Kennedy Frank. Ron supported any event that his kids and grandkids were involved in including being a 4-H softball coach, watching countless sheep shows, enjoying football, volleyball, basketball, baseball games and swim meets, helping with brandings putting up corn and gathering cows.
Ron is preceded in death by his parents, Everett and Francis Elkins.
Ron will be greatly missed by his wife, daughters, sons-in-law, grandchildren, and a brother, along with several nieces and nephews, cousins and many friends.
Ron taught those around him by the way he lived. He was a workaholic, teaching the value of hard work. He was humble and had a kind heart. He had a fun sense of humor and like to “joke” and debate everyone. He made a beautiful life for his girls, (Sharon, Kelly, and Kim.) Ron and Sharon started with very little and worked hard to provide many opportunities for their daughters. Difficulties with health in his final years made enjoying life more challenging. His family is at peace knowing he has a front row seat, cheering us on through all the events we live in his absence.
The family is planning an outdoor Celebration of Life later in the year.
The Gorman Funeral Homes – Platte Chapel of Wheatland are in charge of the arrangements.
