SAMUEL WHITNEY Obituary

Samuel Thomas "Sam" Whitney will be remembered for the great times he shared with buddies in his shop, his jokes, and time with family and especially his grandchildren.

He was a man of many talents, and had a set of skills that, in his own words, let him “fix anything but a broken heart.”

Sam went on his final journey on Wednesday, March 27, 2024 with his beloved wife and family by his side. He was born on Friday, September 9, 1949 in Laramie, Wyoming to William Warren "Bill" and Jeanne (Carroll) Whitney and lived with his siblings on the family ranch, west of town on the Little Laramie River. He loved the hay fields, animals, and wide-open spaces. The family went to many rodeos and he won several rodeo trophies and buckles. Sam left the ranch after graduating from Laramie High School in 1967 and moved to California for a few years. He returned to Wyoming in 1974.

He had many occupations through the years. During the time he worked for the State of Wyoming, he was able to travel the state he loved, covering many of the back roads.

He considered himself a truck driver and loved being behind the wheel of a truck. He drove hay trucks even after retirement. His favorite driving job was taking his four Wheatland grandchildren to school each morning.

Sam loved Cowboy football, as well as high school sports, drag racing, and mud racing. When living on the “farm” in Wheatland he loved growing pumpkins and selling at the farmers’ markets.

The family pumpkin carving extravaganza will be a memory his family will always treasure. After moving to town, he played golf as often as he could. He and Jacquie also enjoyed trips to many Wyoming counties playing as many courses as possible.

He married Jacquie Chasteen in Laramie, on July 1, 1995, 30 years after their first date in 1965. They were married and made their home in Platte County. They shared five children, thirteen grandchildren, and two great grandchildren.

In addition to his wife Jacquie; Sam is survived by children, Londo (Renee) of Bakersfield, California, Miles (Samantha), Piper (Chris), both of Wheatland, and Matt Hallsted (Shaunte) of Seminary, Mississippi.

He is also survived by sister, Jill Zimmerschied of Wheatland; brother, Mike of Tolar, Texas; and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; son, Bryce; brother, Jay; and step-son, Todd Hallsted.

Memorials made to Platte County Hospital and Legacy Home Foundation Board, All Saints’ Episcopal Church, or a charity of your choice would be appreciated by the family.
