He graduated from Mediapolis High School, Mediapolis, Iowa in 1976 and worked various jobs before moving to Douglas, Wyoming in 1992.

He grew up on his parents’ farm in Mediapolis and was always a farmer at heart. Once in Wyoming he found a new love for truck driving and the oil field so much so that he started his own company. Though later due to health issues decided to sell it, in which he started working at Silver Creek Midstream until his retirement in 2024.

He was married to Sherril Summers in 1979, later divorcing. He then married Karol Exley in 1998 and was with her for 28 years until death.

Wendel had ten children, Amanda (Jason) Reed, Stephanie (Max) Smart, Ashly (Chris) Hill, Bristol Bale, Jenny (Brian) McPherson, Zane Bale, Kristin (Christian) Buxton, John (Rebecca) Blake, Kayleen (Kyle) Martinez; and son-in-law, TJ Kingsbury. He also has fifteen grandchildren; one great granddaughter; and numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his daughter, Tia Kingsbury on April 21 2023; his parents, Boyd on April 16, 1991 and mother, Betty on May 29, 1994; and sisters, Ronda Blake and Marla Brenner.

His greatest love was his family and friends.
